[edit] Profile
The Birmingham School of the Built Environment is a major provider of professionally relevant courses for the property and construction industries, dedicated to the teaching of future professionals.
Each course is accredited by at least one of four professional bodies:
- The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
- The Royal Town Planning Institute
- The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists
- The Chartered Institute of Building
The core activity is educating professionals for a technical, ethical, economic, political and social world where the built and natural environment forms the context for human activity.
The innovative collaboration with Birmingham City Council's Urban Design Team means students can gain work experience, work on key individual research projects, gain technical application skills, as well as win excellence awards and contribute to projects influencing future council policy.
The Inter-Professional Project, requires all third-year students to undertake research and produce a report on behalf of an industry client — which has led to students working alongside Birmingham City Council’s Housing Regeneration and Development Department.
Students at the School of the Built Environment have the opportunity to gain direct experience of both construction and people skills by working with Birmingham-based engineering, management and development consultants Mott MacDonald in projects around the UK. As well as this, they have the chance to take part in a major international construction competition hosted by the University, with Mott MacDonald as sponsor.
